“Junie is now a full-fledged pair programmer, able to answer questions, propose plans, and help raise code quality.”

JetBrains has integrated its AI tools, including the upgraded AI Assistant and new coding agent Junie, across all its IDEs under a single subscription. The company has also introduced a free tier to make its AI features more accessible.

Starting with version 2025.1 of its IDEs, JetBrains is offering unlimited code completion and access to local AI models through the free tier. Users can also access cloud-based assistance and Junie on a credit-based system. The paid tiers AI Pro and AI Ultimate provide higher usage quotas. Subscriptions like All Products Pack and dotUltimate will now include AI Pro.

“JetBrains and Anthropic share a commitment to transforming how developers work,” said Mike Krieger, chief product officer at Anthropic. “We’re excited to see how Junie, powered by Claude, will help the global developer community.”

Junie, JetBrains’ AI coding agent, is available to all IDE users since an Early Access Program launched in January. It allows developers to delegate routine tasks and collaborate on complex ones. According to JetBrains, Junie supports tasks such as planning, responding to user queries, and following development guidelines.

“Junie is now a full-fledged pair programmer, able to answer questions, propose plans, and help raise code quality,”  JetBrains stated.

Junie is currently compatible with IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, PyCharm Pro, WebStorm, and GoLand, with support for PhpStorm, RustRover, and RubyMine coming soon.

JetBrains also released an improved version of its AI Assistant, which now supports newer cloud models, including Claude 3.7 Sonnet, Google Gemini 2.5 Pro, and OpenAI models. It now supports multi-file edits through the chat interface and offers better context-aware code suggestions.

“Developers rely on Claude’s state-of-the-art performance in solving complex, real-world coding tasks,” Krieger said.

JetBrains reaffirmed that its AI tools are built with a focus on privacy and security. “Regardless of the tier you choose, your data stays yours,” the company said.

The AI tools aim to streamline development workflows and reduce repetitive tasks. JetBrains emphasised that developers will remain in control and can choose how much AI to incorporate in their projects.

JetBrains’ collaboration includes partnerships with Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google Cloud. “We’re excited to continue collaborating to ensure 11.4 million developers around the world benefit from JetBrains AI,” said Nirav Mehta, senior director of product management at Google Cloud.

Meanwhile, its revenue numbers show strong user trust. According to reports from Sacra obtained by developer Kenneth Auchenberg, JetBrains’ recurring revenue was $593 million in November 2024, the highest amongst all AI copilots and code editors.

For comparison, in the same month, GitHub Copilot generated $400 million and Cursor generated $65 million. At the same time, the revenue from VS Code cannot be directly attributed as it is part of Microsoft’s ecosystem.

It’s not like JetBrains is not into AI. Last year, the team introduced Mellum, a proprietary LLM designed specifically for code completion on its platform. The announcement, which went somewhat unnoticed, received attention from the developer community. Mellum is integrated into JetBrains AI Assistant, a smart coding companion available across the company’s independent development editors.
