In a recent boost to Indian healthcare, the Tata Group announced a partnership with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to launch the Tata IISc Medical School at the IISc Bengaluru campus.

This initiative, backed by a contribution of ₹500 crore from the Tata Group, promises to reshape the landscape of clinical research and medical education in India.

The Tata IISc Medical School will serve as a hub of excellence, merging the power of basic sciences and engineering with clinical science and practice.

Aiming to tackle some of India’s most pressing healthcare challenges, the project will look into critical specialities like oncology, cardiology, neurology, nephrology, infectious diseases, diabetes, and integrative medicine.

This institution’s unique approach to nurturing the next generation of medical innovators sets it apart. By offering integrated MD-PhD and dual-degree programs, students will receive training that blends rigorous clinical practice with research in IISc’s science and engineering labs.

This initiative further aims to create a team of physician-scientists and medical technologists who can bridge the gap between medical practice and research innovation.

The school will collaborate with leading international medical institutions to ensure global relevance and expertise, enabling students to gain exposure to best practices and breakthroughs worldwide.

“Healthcare is one of India’s biggest challenges and also one of its greatest opportunities, given the scale at which technology will be able to transform everything from diagnosis to care and community health,” N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, said.

He added that the Tata IISc Medical School will play a significant role in keeping our communities healthy and positioning India at the forefront of the global healthcare revolution.

Reflecting the same sentiment, G Rangarajan, director of IISc, said that this unique opportunity will create new frontiers in medicine. He added that they are committed to carrying forward this legacy and breaking new ground by creating affordable healthcare solutions for India and the rest of the world.
