OpenAI is hiring machine learning engineers for a new multi-agent research team, according to OpenAI research scientist Noam Brown. “We view multi-agent as a path to even better AI reasoning. Prior multi-agent experience isn’t needed,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter). Brown also encouraged those interested in researching this area with him and Kevin Lee Stone to fill out an application form.
In a recent interview, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared insights on the new o1 model, saying that it will take users some time to fully grasp how to utilise ChatGPT with the updated model. “It’ll take users a while to figure out how to use it, and this is quite different from the GPT models.”

Altman further revealed OpenAI’s five levels of AI classification: “The first was chatbots. The second, which we’ve just reached now, is reasoners. The third is agents. The fourth is innovators, with the ability to discover new scientific information. And the fifth is full organizations.”
He added that the transition from level one to level two took some time. “One of the most exciting aspects of level two is that it enables level three relatively quickly. The agentic experiences this technology will eventually unlock could be quite impactful,” Altman said.
Recently, OpenAI introduced its new o1-preview series of AI models, designed to solve complex problems in fields such as science, coding, and math. These models are now available in ChatGPT and through the API as part of an early preview, with regular updates and improvements planned.
The o1 series is trained to dedicate more time to reasoning before responding, enhancing its problem-solving abilities. In initial tests, the upcoming update of the reasoning model performed on par with PhD students in subjects like physics, chemistry, and biology. The model also achieved notable success in math and coding competitions, scoring 83% on a qualifying exam for the International Mathematics Olympiad, compared to GPT-4o’s 13%.
