India’s developer ecosystem, with 9.5 million developers, is projected to become the world’s largest by 2028.
The foundation’s expansion builds upon an impressive foundation, with nearly 200,000 Indian developers already contributing to Linux Foundation projects.
India’s growing influence in the open source community is evident, with the country being the fourth-largest contributor to Cloud Native Computing Foundation projects and the third-largest contributor to Kubernetes, accounting for 18.7% of global open source commits.
This strategic move has attracted significant industry support, with Infosys, one of India’s leading IT services companies, announcing an “open source first strategy.”
The timing aligns with India’s projected IT spending trajectory, expected to reach $124.6 billion in 2025, with recent surveys indicating that 78% of Indian enterprises now prioritise open-source solutions for their digital transformation initiatives.
The initiative has also garnered international backing, notably from the US Department of Defense, which views this collaboration as crucial for developing secure 5G and 6G technology ecosystems.
This international partnership gains additional significance as India’s government has ramped up its open-source adoption, with over 85% of government projects now leveraging open-source platforms.
The foundation’s partnership with the International Startup Foundation (ISF) addresses the growing demand for specialised skills, responding to a 42% year-over-year increase in demand for open-source expertise in India. This educational initiative aims to bridge the skills gap through advanced training and certification programs in Linux and related technologies.
