India’s DST and AICTE Announce New UG Quantum Courses

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), in collaboration with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), has introduced an undergraduate curriculum to help create a skilled and quantum-trained workforce. 

The initiative aligns with the National Quantum Mission’s goal of accelerating quantum technology research and development.

The office of the principal scientific adviser to the government of India also took to LinkedIn to announce this on Wednesday. 

Ajay K Sood, principal scientific advisor to the government of India, stated that the curriculum integrates theoretical learning with practical lab experiences with the aim of deepening students’ understanding of quantum technologies

He also emphasised its role in creating a workforce essential for India’s technological growth and global leadership in quantum advancements. Abhay Karandikar, secretary of DST, also described the programme as a pivotal step in building a quantum-ready workforce. 

Karandikar noted, “It is designed to provide foundational and advanced knowledge, enabling students from diverse disciplines to take up this UG minor from their third or fourth semester.” He also highlighted the need for teacher training and lab infrastructure to be supported under the National Quantum Mission.

The curriculum will cover four key areas: Quantum Computing, Quantum Communication, Quantum Sensing and Metrology, and Quantum Materials and Devices.

The programme requires a minimum of 18 credits, spanning six courses with both theory and lab components. This includes a 3.0.0 course with three theory lectures per week and an average length of 14 weeks for a semester.

Sitharam T.G, chairman of AICTE, announced that the curriculum is set to roll out in top institutions by July 2025. He urged institutions to adopt the programme and students to recognise the importance of integrating quantum technologies into academic and research frameworks.

Ajai Chowdhry, chairman of the mission governing board, also emphasised the need for internships to complement the coursework.

As part of the initiative, AICTE and the National Quantum Mission will also support lab creation, faculty development programmes, and the publication of educational resources. These efforts aim to establish India as a global leader in quantum technology.

This is not AICTE’s first venture in providing education in AI and related topics. Two years ago, it also launched a virtual internship program in AI for 5,000 students. 

The curriculum is expected to be implemented across AICTE-approved institutions nationwide, expanding access to quantum education and addressing the demand for skilled professionals in this cutting-edge field.
