CockroachDB Taps Bengaluru as Key Hub for Engineering and APAC Growth

In an exclusive interview with AIM, Spencer Kimball, CEO of Cockroach Labs, shared his vision for India. The company aims to build a first-class engineering presence and expand go-to-market efforts. 

Less than two years ago, the company announced this expansion in Bengaluru. In such a short span, CockroachDB has transformed its Bengaluru office into a key centre for engineering and APAC expansion. What started as an experiment is now a vital part of the company’s global strategy. 

The team has grown into 55 members across engineering, support, and cloud, focusing on scaling operations and driving innovation. 

“We came to this conclusion that our go-to-market efforts want to expand in APAC out of India as well,” Kimball said, reflecting on the region’s growth potential.

Bengaluru leads critical development projects, tackling complex challenges in database and cloud engineering. Teams in India have been empowered to take full ownership of product functions, enhancing productivity and autonomy.

“It’s a little hard to do business in China,” added Kimball suggesting how India allowed for a more approachable business strategy for a company primarily based in the United States, without any language barriers or mismatches. He also described how strategic customers in India value local engineering for escalations, discussions, and partnerships.
