T-Mobile begins limited Beta test for satellite texting.

Apple has reportedly collaborated with SpaceX and T-Mobile to integrate Starlink satellite connectivity into the latest iPhone software update. This provides an alternative to Apple’s existing Globalstar service, which lets consumers send texts and contact emergency responders when out of cellular range.

iPhones running iOS 18.3 now support Starlink technology, a feature added quietly in Apple’s recent software release. T-Mobile has begun a limited beta test, allowing select customers to send text messages via satellite when outside cellular coverage.

The unexpected partnership follows T-Mobile’s earlier announcement that Starlink would support Samsung devices, including the Z Fold and S24 models.

Some iPhone users in the beta program received messages from T-Mobile confirming their participation. A new toggle in cellular data settings enables satellite messaging. The test also includes select Android 15 devices.

Apple has not responded to comment inquiries. Starlink’s current service is limited to texting, but SpaceX and T-Mobile plan to add voice and data capabilities as well.

Unlike Apple’s Globalstar feature, which requires users to aim their device at the sky, Starlink’s system functions automatically. The service is only available in the US, though SpaceX aims to expand it globally.

T-Mobile’s website now lists iPhone support under iOS 18.3, with a wider beta expansion planned for February. In November, the Federal Communications Commission conditionally approved SpaceX’s request to support T-Mobile’s network.

This development comes after Starlink’s announcement of a partnership with SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) on Monday. With this, passengers can now enjoy high-speed internet, even over remote areas like the North Pole or Atlantic Ocean, with fleet-wide to be rolled out in late 2025.

Additionally, on Tuesday, Texas-based Oracle also announced it is leveraging connectivity from Starlink to enhance the Enterprise Communications Platform.
